3 Man Tent – Great for Backpackers

A 3 man tent is popular for backpackers and people who are going to festivals.  The backpackers want a tent that is small and lightweight to carry and is relatively easy to set up.  People going to a festival need a small tent because space is usually very limited.  A couple will sometimes buy 3 man tents because a 2 man tent leaves no room for their belongings since these tents are rated only for the number of people they will hold.

The tents are now rated by the number of seasons they can handle weather conditions of.  A 4 season tent should be capable of withstanding snow, rain and wind, but you should also check how much weight they can hold for snow and the maximum mph of wind.  Make sure your tent is treated for rain or else it will leak and can be susceptible to mildew if not properly cared for.  They also have special floors to keep the water out, and some have hoods or vestibules over the door to give you shelter when entering the tent.

Tunnel tents are one of the 4 most popular and compared to the dome tent it is:
•    Quicker to pitch
•    Gives more space for the weight
•    Has a number of poles that create a tunnel when bent over so there is more headroom
It is not as stable as the dome tent and has to have guides so if the ground is either real hard or soft it is not suitable.

A teepee style tent may be right for you if you plan to backpack a lot. These tents are lightweight and so will not add much to your pack. The wedge or A-frame tent, or, pup tent, is a standard tent that will provide the necessary room to sleep three but may not be as comfortable as newer designs. The dome or umbrella tent is probably the most popular. It serves many purposes well, is easy to set up, and provides sufficient room.

The dome tent creates a dome by folding 2 poles across each other.  This means less headroom, but they are often given a bedroom or porch to compensate for it.  They take more time to pitch and are heavier than the tunnel tents, but are more stable.

Pop up tents are better suited to smaller numbers and their only advantage is the ease with which they are set up, often just take out of the bag, give it a shake to put it in shape and peg it down.  The 4 Season Tent is preferred by year round hikers.  They usually have more poles for stability and keep the wind out and warmth in by having only a little mesh.

Eureka and Coleman both make a dome 3 man tent for less than $100.00.  A tent should be treated for water and the UV rays for longevity.  A lot of them have loops to hold your solar lights.  A 3 man tent will sleep 3 with no extra space, so be sure you get a tent large enough for your needs.  Some tents have storage areas, so shop around.
